Linz has a long feminist history in art with stories we must tell ourselves and each other again and again, so that we don’t lose them.
On Thursday, May 14th, we heard the sad news that a prominent figure from this history has died. Since she can no longer cause trouble or contradict them, it is likely that institutions and representative persons will offer glowing eulogies filled with praise.
We see ourselves as part of this history too, so instead, now we would like to state some of the lessons we learned from VALIE EXPORT.
• Do not ask for permission. It will not be granted.
• Do not seek approval. You don’t need it.
• Do not attempt to avoid conflicts and contention. They will find you anyway.
• Say your own name and tell your own story.
• Always be generous with your truth.
